Marseille, France. North of the city, Crottes district. At the vocational high school, young people are training to install fiber optics, a "profession of the future!". Régis, the educational manager, is a firm believer in this, and he will be embarking these apprentices on the road to lʼemployment of tomorrow. Just a few blocks away, the Chez Roberte café is witnessing the transformation of the neighborhood into Smartseille. Formerly a dockers quarter, Les Crottes will become the new connected district, which will "inscribe Marseille in the future". Claire, a loyal lʼétablissement customer, lives just a few streets away. She has to pack her bags because she is being expropriated. We no longer want her and what she represents in this future urban landscape. Antoine, on the other hand, sends us messages from Singapore. The cable ship on which he works is stretching a fiber-optic cable to Marseille, more than 5,000 km in one piece. The city becomes a digital data hub on a global scale. The cityʼs northern districts are the scene of an urban transformation at the service of the digital revolution. How can 125 microns of luminous fiber so dramatically change the lives of Marseillais today and tomorrow?
